Why Your Knees Hurt Going Up Stairs
Many adults over 40 believe knee pain means their knees are worn out.
Sometimes that’s true.
But after helping adults 40+ for more than 30 years, I’ve learned that many cases of knee pain are actually caused by problems above or below the knee.
The knee is often the victim, not the culprit.
Weak glutes, tight hips, poor ankle mobility, muscle imbalances, and loss of leg strength can place excessive stress on the knee joint.
The result:
* Pain going up or down stairs
* Difficulty standing from a chair
* Reduced activity levels
* Less confidence in movement
* Avoiding the things you enjoy
I experienced this myself.
My left knee was giving me problems and I was told by orthopedic specialists that years of heavy squatting had likely damaged my knee and that surgery might be necessary.
Instead of focusing only on the knee, I looked at how my body was moving.
What I found was:
* My external hip rotators were strong, but my internal rotators were weak
* My left pelvis was stuck in internal rotation
* My left ankle was excessively supinated (rolled outward)
The knee was simply responding to what the hip and ankle were telling it to do.
Once I addressed the real causes with a properly designed corrective exercise routine, the knee pain gradually disappeared.
Today, I have no pain in my left knee.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is this:
The knee is often the “dumbest” joint in the body.
It usually follows what the hip and ankle are doing.
If the hip isn’t stable or the ankle isn’t moving correctly, the knee often pays the price.
That’s why simply treating the pain doesn’t always solve the problem.
You have to identify the cause, not just chase the symptoms.
At Fit Over 40 Dallas, we help adults identify movement limitations, muscle imbalances, and strength deficits that may be contributing to knee pain so they can move better, stay active, and continue doing the things they love.
