Let me share my story with you

I remember this as if it were yesterday. It as January 2nd, 2013…it was a Wednesday 10 years ago now: I recall that it was a cloudy, overcast winter day with near-freezing 37 degrees in Texas. And I was wearing my favorite hoodie sweatshirt.

I was with my wife and my oldest son Michael, who was 20 at the time. We had just celebrated Christmas together the week earlier when I got the incredible news that we were going to be grandparents to a little girl, Amelia.

Wow, she had arrived and me a granddad! 

I was so stoked. So there we were, my wife and I, heading our way to the hospital to see our new little granddaughter.

Then, right there in the car, in that moment, IT HAPPENED:

My heart was pounding so loud could literally hear it and I knew something just wasn’t right. I sluggishly asked my wife, “where are we going again?” and She said, “to the hospital to meet little Amelia.” Then I asked her, “which hospital again?” And that’s when she got really concerned and said to me, “hey, are you ok?” I said, “no, I can’t really see out of my left eye and something feels wrong in my chest.” I had no idea what was going on, so I had my wife rush me to the nearby hospital emergency room.

At the local ER, they wheeled me quickly and hooked up all sorts of machines. Turns out my heart was about to explode and my BP was skyrocketing. You see over the past year, I had an injury and stopped training altogether and left myself go.

Yes, I was still working and training all my clients 10-12 hours a day, but I was injured and so busy, that I started to eat a ton of fast food. Life and stress were overwhelming and I packed on a whopping 30 extra pounds during this time. And to be honest, I was feeling really nervous cause this never happened to me.

But still, it took this one event — something so embarrassing and life-altering — to really move me into action, which took me from being a fit, athletic guy to this sluggish, extra-heavy, overweight guy. Even though I competed in bodybuilding, powerlifting and MMA for years and knew all about training and nutrition…I just stopped doing it. I was so busy working, coupled with the new addition to our family, I let my health suffer.

Turns out, I was experiencing an anxiety attack

My body was responding to all the stress during this tough time that I had no releases. I felt like I had hit rock bottom and was spinning out of control… and that I had failed to live up to the expectations of being a fitness trainer…I mean I know better…after all, I teach it to my clients.

Just imagine the look on the doctor's face when I told him what I did for a living. I mean, even he was surprised.
I’ll never forget it!

So, there I was, sitting in that stupid, blue hospital gown with an EKG hooked up when I decided at that very moment to make a change that would affect my life forever:

  • I will NEVER, EVER let myself feel this way again.
  • I’m letting down my family.
  • I’m letting down my friends.
  • I’m letting down my clients.
  • I’m letting down anyone that loves me.
  • I’m going to solve this health issue or DIE TRYING!
I promised myself I'd spend 8 hours a day, no matter what it took, perfecting the art of getting back into shape. Now that I was in my 40's, I knew this was going to be a little more difficult.

I had a health club membership but I had not been using it and even though I had been a ‘gym rat’ in my early days, something about walking back into that gym again felt alien to me. I picked my way through a sea of treadmills and cardio machines and headed for the free weights that had been my old stomping grounds. But after only ten frustrating minutes, I ended my work out early and left.

The next day, I found myself in the same exact place. This time head down, headphones blaring, wearing a baggy t-shirt, hoping no one noticed me and running on a treadmill like a hamster. I looked into joining an exercise class, but the class times were not convenient for my schedule. It was a super-busy, big box gym and I would often find myself driving through a full parking lot for thirty minutes, unable to find a spot.

Often times, I left without even getting out of the car because I needed to get home to my family. I would promise myself to make up for it by working out extra hard the next day, but that rarely happened.

So I decided that, when I could find a 30-minute break during my full-schedule day, I would lock my studio doors, blast music through my headphones, and do half of a normal one hour workout. I knew that a quick 30-minute workout would better fit my schedule and I hoped and prayed that this would be enough time to get my health and fitness back on track.

I started to change things up. I decided to try some ideas that were totally unconventional. It was almost opposite what I had learned and what everyone else was teaching.

Turns out what I had literally stumbled onto was actually hidden away in obscure medical and research journals

One study showed that 30-minute workouts style training, when done correctly, increased metabolism for 48 hours later! Whoa! So I began tweaking everything I thought I knew about exercise after age 40.

Mind you, I’ve seen most every program out there. I tried most every program out there but I don’t ever remember anyone telling me about this type of training. And guess what? I started seeing results and the results started to come quickly.

And thanks to that turning point, I uncovered a formula that propelled me to success with my goal of getting back into great shape again. Question was, would it work for others my other clients?

Bigger problem is that the average fitness trainer out there doesn’t know how to work with women age 40+ and they’re giving out cookie-cutter programs that aren’t working to help these 2 factors or worse, causing joint damage. Honestly, they get their routines from a pre-written program.

We’re told by these younger “millennial” trainers that we need to spend hours in a gym lifting weights or running on the treadmill like everyone else to regain our physiques. And these lies are keeping us from having optimal health and enjoying our lives as get older.

Many folks believe that pumping weights in the gym for an hour a day X 6 days a week just to see success in toning, tightening, and firming your body is the solution. You may have heard that or even believed that at one point in your life. And as a former bodybuilder, I used to believe this myself… HOWEVER:

Hang in there, I need to tell you something

The truth may surprise you…you can actually get into great shape with short 30-minute workout routines if done properly. So the questions is, how do you do it correctly or properly?

Now I’ll be sharing the 4 VITAL Elements that make up the FIT40+Formula™ when it comes to getting in the best shape after age 40. You may want to write these 4 essential elements down. Just be WARNED: Without applying ALL 4 of these Vital Elements, you can virtually forget about succeeding… that is THE most important tip of all… so here we go…

Vital Element #1: This is what I call the Less is More Principle

When it comes to fitness over 40… less is more. Research shows that doing short bursts of exercise boosts fat burning, muscle building and anti-aging hormones without any negative side effects like inflammation and production of stress hormones. Low grade chronic inflammation, which cause you to gain fat… can be triggered by doing long and arduous exercises. Even an hour of constant exercising at moderate to hard intensity can induce inflammation in your body causing damage to your body and accelerate the aging process.

That said, the solution is not to stop exercising. No that would just add to problem. The solution lies in performing the right exercises in the correct order, the right way. Studies have shown that doing specific exercises performed a specific way can boost your youth-enhancing hormones by 450%! So, fist-bump, no more spending hours in a gym. Anyone who tells you that, is simply following a pre-written script for younger people, not those over age 40.

Vital Element #2: is what I call Resistance Movements.

I found out that working muscles slower through the resistance part of the movement, built my muscle strength quickly while saving and protecting my joints. I have bad shoulders from all the wrong things I did when I was younger, so this helped protect my joints.

Element #2 is so different than what others are saying about using heavy free weights or box jumping or burpees which is putting far more stress on our joints. Element 2 will build your muscles faster and decrease injuries compared to other types of training. On top of that, research has shown that combining Element 1 and 2 increases strength, builds muscles for more energy and peak power production!

Vital Element #3: This is what I call the 4-Pillar Building Blocks.

I discovered that each workout produced huge results when I combined 4 customized “blocks” into every routine. These 4 blocks are combining a Major muscle group + a Minor muscle Group + a Core Move + a Cardio Move. I created these for me and then my clients. What this means is that you get a full-body workout from every single routine.

Element #3 is polar opposite those that say to have ‘upper body day’ or ‘lower body day.’ I call that old school workouts. Our bodies need all muscles working together to function at its best not isolation. The “isolation” programs may be good for youngsters but not us. My 4-Pillar Building Blocks Element reverses the aging process or that thing they call Sarcopenia.

Vital Element #4: Uses the concept I coined called “Muscle Adaptation.”

Basically, I used a circuit-style layout and varied the movements every single time plus I adjusted them for various fitness levels. This meant that our bodies have no choice but to change or ‘adapt’ to the new moves and that’s where I got such huge gains in fitness levels for me and then all my clients.

Element #4 basically means I can customize the program based on where you are right now and where you want to be. It’s not like these cookie-cutter plans that some pull off the internet. The various moves keep it exciting and my clients couldn’t wait to get back again to see what’s next. The Muscle Adaptation Element is a huge key that really changed the fitness game for me.

Fall Session Details​

Let's take a look at the details of membership in the FIT40+ Semi-Private Fitness Program:

Location

The live, in-person sessions are help at my private studio inside the well-known Golf Academy at 2538 Golden Bear Drive, Carrollton, TX 75006.

Dates

The fall session will start Monday, October 17 and run until Wednesday, December 14, a 60-day session commitment ending just before the busy holidays.

Times per week

You will need to commit to 2 days per week. Mondays and Wednesdays and you will have a choice of times ranging from 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm whichever fits your schedule best.

Session Times

Each workout will be 45 minutes max in and out the door which includes the 30-minutes workout.

Semi-Private Groups

We only allow 4 clients per time session. So you will have others just like you working together for common goals. No millennials in short spandex taking selfies and talking on their phones here or standing around waiting for the equipment.
